To earn your certification, you must pass an open-book and multiple-choice final exam with 20 module assignments. The course offers self-study materials, coaching training sessions, and feedback to help you prepare for the test. A buddy coaching program is also available, in which you meet with another learner for a one-on-one coaching session.

Benefits of becoming certified

While certifications in career coaching aren’t necessary, they can add credibility and help you learn how to be more successful and gain clientele. Other benefits include the following.

1. Enhance your credibility.

A certification helps enhance your credibility and could make you more competitive in the industry, potentially allowing you to maximize your earning power. Clients want to put their trust in someone helping them make major life decisions, and having a certification shows that you are a professional who understands what career coaching entails.

2. Shows you’ve reached a level of learning

As a career coach, certification shows that you spent time and energy to achieve higher learning. In addition to the fundamental duties of a career coach, you will also know the specific skills needed for coaching, such as how to develop your unique coaching style, coach clients at various career stages, and work with clients from different industries.

3. Exhibits your skills.

Career coaching certifications equip you with skills to help others realize what they are looking for to feel job satisfaction. You’ll hone your ability to work with clients to figure out what motivates them. You should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, offer proper instruction and problem-solving to clients, and be able to pick up on your clients’ behavioral cues to provide tailored assistance.

How to choose a career coach certification

The certification you choose as a career coach should center around your future plans. Ask your employer which certification they value, particularly if you want to get promoted. If you're going to work independently, you may choose a program that includes developing marketing and branding skills. Some other factors to consider include:

  • Your budget, as programs can range from around $100 to thousands of dollars.

  • Your availability will determine how many hours you can dedicate to your program in class and studying and whether an online option is better.

  • The credentials of the program, which ensure you are choosing a recognizable and reputable one.
