An Executive Master of Business Administration, or EMBA as it’s sometimes called, is a degree designed to help working professionals learn important leadership skills, build professional networks, and improve managerial skills and methodologies in a specific field of business. Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business offered Canada’s first EMBA program in 1968. Today, prospective students can choose from more than a dozen EMBA programs available in Canada.

The EMBA degree program is a popular and convenient option for those with several years of business and leadership experience. While the typical EMBA program takes two years to complete, some universities may offer accelerated one-year EMBA programs. Much of the coursework mirrors a traditional MBA program, but a key distinction separates an executive MBA from an MBA. Classroom discussions in an EMBA program tend to be more advanced and interactive, as students in these programs generally have more real-world business experience. According to a report by the Executive MBA Council, the average age of someone entering an EMBA program globally is 39 years old [1].

Find out more about this degree option, including what it takes to apply for an EMBA and the time commitment you'll be making to earn your degree, as well as common courses part of an EMBA program, salary outlook for EMBA holders, and reasons to pursue the degree.

EMBA application requirements

Since the EMBA is designed for those with existing business experience, the admission requirements tend to be slightly different than for traditional MBA programs. While admission policies vary from program to program, some common requirements core to most EMBA programs are:

1. Bachelor’s degree or entrance exam scores

Many EMBA programs require a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent to apply, but not all. Program-specific requirements vary. Expect some programs to accept extensive work experience or GMAT or other standardized test scores in place of educational degrees.

The GMAT is not always a requirement for program eligibility, but some schools do require completion of the GMAT or GRE as part of entrance requirements. Schools offering the EMBA may accept the Executive Assessment instead of the GMAT or GRE. The Executive Assessment is a shorter standardized test designed to assess the knowledge experienced professionals have accumulated during their careers. It takes 90 minutes to complete, compared to the two hours and 15 minutes for the GMAT.

2. Work experience

Executive MBA programs typically require applicants to have business experience, including a few years at the management level. The exact numbers vary from school to school, with most graduate-level business schools requiring a minimum of five years.

3. Other application materials

You’ll also typically need to provide your transcripts and letters of recommendation, including at least one from a direct supervisor. You may be asked to write essays based on topics provided by the school.  Other application materials schools may require include a statement of intent and a resume detailing professional work experience, education, achievements, etc.

If you are an international student, you may need to provide documents or transcripts so the school can assess your professional and educational credentials. Each university has its own criteria and rules around transferring and considering academic credentials earned in your home country.

Duration and program scheduling

EMBA programs were created for busy working professionals. They're known for covering coursework similar to traditional MBA programs but in a more condensed format and with hours that allow you to work around your career.

An Executive MBA usually takes two years to complete. You will typically have classes on evenings and weekends. This schedule is designed for working professionals, which means you’ll be working and immersed in intensive study at the same time. Many programs provide online and self-paced learning modules paired with in-person classes.

Common course curriculum

If you're in an EMBA program, you may be able to choose a concentration to specialise in a certain area. You’ll also have a choice of electives to help you customize your degree experience to fit your career goals. Many programs include a business project that acts as a capstone project or multiple projects completed at the culmination of each semester. An international study component may also be a part of the curriculum.

Your core courses will likely focus on accounting principles, leadership, analytics, and business. While your curriculum will depend on the program you choose, examples of some course topics you may take include:

  • Executive leadership

  • Role of the general manager

  • Managing human capital

  • Supply chain management

  • International business

  • Managerial and financial accounting

  • Corporate strategy

  • Bargaining and negotiations

  • Data analysis and decision-making

EMBA tuition costs

The cost of an EMBA depends on factors set by the school and where you live. For example, in some cases, tuition fees and overall costs are affected if you attend the program as an international or out-of-province student. The cost among provinces also varies greatly.  When looking at the top business schools in Canada, the cost of an EMBA program can range anywhere from $30,000 CAD to $170,000 CAD, with the average cost being $69,310 CAD [2].

Depending on the program, tuition may include books and materials. Some programs also include meals and residence in the cost of tuition.

Is an Executive MBA worth it?

Earning an EMBA allows you to hone the business and management skills you already have. This credential could set you up for advancement opportunities in your field. In many cases, you can continue working as you pursue this degree.

EMBA salary

According to data gathered by Payscale, the average salary for an EMBA degree holder in Canada is $119,000 CAD per year [3]. Professionals with an EMBA may be eligible for higher-paying positions that range from finance director to CEO, making the degree a smart choice for anyone looking to advance their career and increase earnings overtime.

Next Steps

An executive MBA program offers seasoned professionals an opportunity to advance their careers while gaining cutting-edge business knowledge and acumen. As an advanced degree program, EMBA degrees are ideal for working professionals with busy schedules, providing the flexibility and resources needed to excel in business while achieving career goals.
