The Russell Group represents 24 of the leading universities in the UK, each known for its excellence in research. Russell Group members focus on public research and enjoy global respect as high-quality educational establishments. Given their reputation, Russell Group members like Cardiff University and the University of Oxford attract a high level of talent, and most have entry requirements reflecting the competitive nature of admissions. Studying at a Russell Group university brings a certain level of prestige.

What is the Russell Group?

The Russell Group is an association of UK universities, with at least one in each major UK city. It was founded in 1994 and mainly consists of established universities that consistently rank highly in the university league tables. The group started with 17 original members, and universities can still join or leave the group.

The name “Russell Group” comes from the former Hotel Russell in London, where representatives from each university first met to petition the government to prioritise funding for important research projects.

Universities included in the Russell Group

The Russell Group contains 24 member universities as of July 2024. The group includes:

What is the focus of a Russell Group university?

Russell Group universities are among some of the best in the world and focus on research. According to the group, its universities produce 68 percent of all UK-produced world-leading research [1]. This level of research comes with financial advantages to the UK, with Russell Group universities contributing £87 billion to the UK economy annually [2].

Selection criteria for a Russell Group university

Russell Group universities are highly regarded and have global acclaim, so their entry requirements can be high. They vary across institutions and from course to course, and universities differ in their entry standards.

Some courses and universities in the Russell Group have reputations for particularly high entry requirements, such as Oxford and Cambridge, which generally require three A’s or A*’s at A level (or equivalent) to enter most courses. These programs tend to be very competitive, with some, for example, receiving an average of six applications per course place available [3].

Grades are important in gaining entry, but with such high competition for places, you must also write an excellent personal statement and demonstrate your extracurricular activities, awards, additional studies, employment, and references.

You may find that some (though not all) Russell Group university places are available through Clearing if you don’t make the grades. While this is unlikely with popular courses, you might be lucky if you pursue one less sought-after.

Benefits of studying at a Russell Group university

With strong reputations, Russell Group universities offer prestige and world-class teaching and research for students. These benefits can lead to excellent career opportunities, research options, and high salaries.

University ranking

Most Russell Group universities tend to rank very high in the university league tables. These universities enjoy worldwide renown, with reputations for excellence in research teaching. They also have strong links with the business world and the community.

Make a name in research

Approximately two-thirds of research in the UK comes from Russell Group universities. This opens ample opportunities and world-class teaching for anyone looking to continue to study postgraduate qualifications in research.

Job opportunities

A top qualification from a Russell Group university will strengthen your chances of gaining a graduate position. You will likely have honed your interview skills and gained relevant experience alongside your degree.

Network

A university that attracts so much talent provides network opportunities. Russell Group universities often produce outstanding talent, and you are bound to connect with some highly successful alumni. You may even find a mentor to learn from in your area of interest.

International recognition

Russell Group universities are world-renowned, and many students from across the globe seek positions in each admitted class. In fact, 32 percent of students across Russell Group universities come from outside the UK [2].

Factors to consider

Russell Group universities have an excellent reputation and a high level of success. However, you may find other options available. Before deciding which course and university you should apply for, consider looking at all options and weighing the pros and cons of each.

Cost

Russell Group universities are highly prestigious, and their tuition fees tend to reflect the high level of education and resources available for students. Typically, these schools charge the maximum course fee allowed, which is £9,250 per year in England and Wales. In addition, Russell Group universities tend to be in main cities where the cost of living can be higher.

For international students, Wise recently compiled a list of the most expensive places to study in the UK, and all but one were Russell Group universities [4]. Learners in need of financial assistance can explore available student loans to help with the cost of tuition fees.

Field of study

Russell Group universities are among the best in terms of research and academic standards. Depending on your field, you may find other universities that excel in your area of choice. For example, if you study graphic design, top universities include Loughborough University, The University of Staffordshire, and Glasgow School of Art.

Other high-ranking universities

The Russell Group is not the only university group. Other groups have different focuses. For example, the University Alliance consists of universities that combine practical experience and learning, while GuildHE universities specialise in the arts, agriculture, education, law, health, sports, and business. It’s also helpful to remember that while the Russell Group boasts many of the top UK universities as members, not all high rollers are in the group. For example, the University of St Andrews is currently ranked fourth in the University League tables, yet it is not a Russell Group university.
