The MBA is one of the most popular business degrees in the world, with India boasting the second largest pool of MBA graduates globally, behind only China [1]. Considering its popularity, you’ll find several options for study, including both full-time and part-time options, with various specialisms, at various universities and business schools.

When looking for a reputable course, it’s fair to ask, “Is an online MBA valid?” This article explores whether an online MBA is a good option, the benefits of choosing this study method, and how to determine whether your chosen course is valid.

What is an MBA degree?

An MBA stands for a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. It is a two-year, full-time postgraduate degree course for learners who want a career in business, management, or leadership. The course focuses on skills valuable in business regardless of industry, including leadership, communication, critical thinking, strategic thinking, problem-solving, and business ethics.

The MBA is a popular degree offered by  5,000 business schools and colleges across India [2]. Each specialism relates to an area of business, so choosing what is important.

Specialisms include:

  • Marketing

  • Finance

  • International business

  • Information technology

  • Human resources

  • Business analytics

  • Marketing management

  • Operations management

  • Financial management

  • Systems management

  • Retail management

  • Supply chain management

Types of MBA

Full-time MBAs are usually in-person and last two years, but this isn’t the best option for everyone. Different methods of study are available and valid, accepted methods in India and across the world:

  • Part-time MBA: You can study for a part-time MBA, which is usually taught in the evenings and on weekends. This is ideal for people who work and are looking to develop their business skills further.

  • Executive MBA: This course suits professionals with business experience. It’s similar to the full-time MBA course but shorter and commands higher fees.

  • Online MBA: An online version offers classes and workshops via videoconferencing, with tests and resources shared using a Learning Management System (LMS).

  • Distance MBA: A distance learning MBA offers maximum flexibility with remote teaching and the ability to choose your schedule.

MBA courses are designed to be equal regardless of the method of delivery. Whether you study full-time, part-time, online, or via distance learning, your MBA course will be as valid as the next person’s.

Why choose an online MBA?

If you’re wondering whether an online MBA is valid in India, it may surprise you that it is currently the most popular way to study it. Around 246 reputable colleges and private business schools offer the qualification [3].

Some reasons why an online MBA course is such a popular option include the following.

Cost

Online MBA degrees are considerably cheaper than full-time ones. Lessons occur online, so operational costs are lower than in-person learning. You also have the added benefit of not having travel, accommodation, and food costs, as with on-campus programmes.

In addition, you can pay online course fees monthly rather than a high upfront cost, which is beneficial if you are on a low income or need to pay as you work. An online MBA costs as little as three lakhs, compared to 18 lakhs for the average full-time MBA course [4].

Flexibility

An online MBA offers flexible learning in a way that full-time, on-campus courses cannot. It opens up study opportunities to people who cannot study in person due to other commitments, such as a job, family, and location requirements. With some courses, you also have the option to work at your own pace, downloading course material when you need it.

Career advancement

Studying online gives you the flexibility to study alongside your existing job, making career advancements such as aiming for a promotion possible. They can also boost your resume skills.

Networking

Networking might seem like an advantage for a full-time in-person MBA rather than an online MBA. However, an online course can give you networking opportunities with a wider range of people, as they can access an online MBA from anywhere.

Online MBA vs in-person MBA

You’ve seen several reasons to choose an online MBA, but you’ll also find benefits to in-person MBA courses. The right choice depends on your unique circumstances and preferences. If you want something that is flexible, cost-effective, and allows you to study at your own pace, an online MBA might work well for you. Similarly, an in-person MBA might benefit you more if you want the benefits of an immersive on-campus experience with structure and full-time commitment. It’s advisable to do your research and carefully consider the format that will be right for you.

How to ensure your online MBA is valid in India

Online MBAs are popular in India, and their entry criteria and course material are similar to any other type of MBA. Looking to reputable universities to find a course that suits you is essential. Look for ones approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) or All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The reputation of the university you choose plays a role in your career prospects, with top colleges and universities commanding higher salaries and, therefore, a higher return on investment.
