Bio

Kevin Sabet, PhD, is the Director of the University of Florida Drug Policy Institute, and an Assistant Professor in the UF College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. With Patrick J. Kennedy, he is the co-founder of Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana). He is the author of Reefer Sanity: Seven Great Myths About Marijuana (2013, Beaufort).

He is a consultant to numerous domestic and international organizations, including the United Nations, through his company, the Policy Solutions Lab. From 2009-2011, he served in the Obama administration as the Senior Advisor at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). His nonpartisan commitment to the issue is demonstrated through his service to both the Clinton and Bush administrations in 2000, and from 2003 to 2004, respectively, in the areas of research, policy and speech writing. He remains the only White House drug policy office staffer to have held a political appointment in both the Bush and Obama administrations.

Sabet is regularly invited to give testimony to governments, and is a frequent contributor to opinion-editorial pages worldwide, in outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Los Angeles Times. He also has appeared on every major news network in the United States and the United Kingdom. A Marshall Scholar, he earned his doctoral and master’s degrees in social policy at the University of Oxford. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
