About the Course

This course is all about matrices, and concisely covers the linear algebra that an engineer should know. The mathematics in this course is presented at the level of an advanced high school student, but it is recommended that students take this course after completing a university-level single variable calculus course. There are no derivatives or integrals involved, but students are expected to have a basic level of mathematical maturity. Despite this, anyone interested in learning the basics of matrix algebra is welcome to join. The course consists of 38 concise lecture videos, each followed by a few problems to solve. After each major topic, there is a short practice quiz. Solutions to the problems and practice quizzes can be found in the instructor-provided lecture notes. The course spans four weeks, and at the end of each week, there is an assessed quiz. Download the lecture notes from the link https://www.math.hkust.edu.hk/~machas/matrix-algebra-for-engineers.pdf And watch the promotional video from the link https://youtu.be/IZcyZHomFQc...

With regards to my course and program, this was relevant. Although I was behind on some weeks, it was because some of the topics were not in concurrence with my course, but this course really helped.

This is a carefully sequenced, content-rich introduction to Matrices; beware skimming over details: eg. the use of matrix formalism to solve the least squares problem is little short of magic.

Might be very useful for engineers, I was not. It was compact crash course at the expense of not having a natural continuation between the topics. Certain topics such as orthogonal vectors, Leibniz formula and normal equations needed longer explanations than what was provided. I failed to see their relevance to solving the quiz questions. I wish the examples and sample problems after the lectures re-visited what was discussed in the lectures. Instead they were too advanced from the lecture material.

The course materials are well prepared and organised. The teaching style is approachable and clear. I have learned a lot from this course. Thank you so much, and wish you all the best Prof. Chasnov!

Don't get me wrong the course has a lot of interesting contents and it's well structured and the instructor is quite good at teaching, but this course shouldn't be called "Matrix Algebra" this is a basic Linear Algebra course and you won't find any topic related to Matrix Algebra courses taught in universities. You won't find stuff such as Jordan Canonical Forms, Sylvester's law of inertia, Spectral Theorem, Other Matrix Decompositions, Generalized Eigenvectors, etc, etc. Anyway the course was great and I remembered few things that are important.

The course is well designed, Dont worry if you do not have previous algebra background. You will get everthing as the course proceed.
