This is primarily aimed at first- and second-year undergraduates interested in psychology, data analysis, and quantitative research methods along with high school students and professionals with similar interests.
This course delves into the foundational concepts of probability and statistics, emphasizing the importance of random sampling and the normal distribution. Students will learn to apply statistical methods, including z-scores, effect size, and confidence intervals in the context of null hypothesis significance testing. The course also covers the implications of the central limit theorem and the relationship between statistical power and error types. When do you think about probability? Do you think about games of chance, shuffling cards, rolling dice, the probability of winning a lottery? Or do you think about events in daily life, the probability that you will need your umbrella today, the probability you will make it to an appointment on time when traffic is heavy? Using statistics depends critically on a basic understanding of probability. We need concepts from probability theory to know, for instance, what it means to draw a random sample, or how to estimate how likely it is that we might observe a particular value of a variable or statistic.

In this module, we begin using inferential statistics to test hypotheses. We use the z-test, which compares a sample mean with a population mean, to introduce the concept of statistical significance and the steps involved in determining whether a result is statistically significant.

Access to lectures and assignments depends on your type of enrollment. If you take a course in audit mode, you will be able to see most course materials for free. To access graded assignments and to earn a Certificate, you will need to purchase the Certificate experience, during or after your audit. If you don't see the audit option:
The course may not offer an audit option. You can try a Free Trial instead, or apply for Financial Aid.
The course may offer 'Full Course, No Certificate' instead. This option lets you see all course materials, submit required assessments, and get a final grade. This also means that you will not be able to purchase a Certificate experience.
When you enroll in the course, you get access to all of the courses in the Specialization, and you earn a certificate when you complete the work. Your electronic Certificate will be added to your Accomplishments page - from there, you can print your Certificate or add it to your LinkedIn profile. If you only want to read and view the course content, you can audit the course for free.
