Who is this degree for?

Whether you have entry qualifications or experience working in a data science role, earning a Master's degree in Data Science (Statistics) can help accelerate your career. If you do not have the standard entry qualifications for the Master’s degree in Data Science (Statistics) the University of Leeds welcomes applications via the Performance Pathway entry route.

Route 1: Standard Entry 

To meet the standard entry requirements, you need a 2:1 Bachelor of Science honours degree (3.0 GPA). Transcripts should show evidence of at least 5 undergraduate modules in a combination of mathematics and statistics. At least one module should be in Statistics, and all modules should be across at least 2 years of your previous study.

Route 2: Performance Pathway

To qualify for the Performance Pathway entry route, you need either:

  • a minimum of a 3rd class (2.2 GPA) Bachelor of Science honours degree or Bachelor of Engineering honours degree or

  • 3 years of relevant professional work experience. This experience should demonstrate competencies in:

    • Working with large data sets

    • Visualising and summarising data

    • “Cleaning” data

    • Data modelling

    • Statistical analysis

    • Using statistical software such as R, SPSS, or Python

To evaluate your work experience, we will contact you with details about the additional information you need to provide after submitting your application.

Once you begin your studies, you’ll also need to achieve a pass (50% weighted average or higher) in both of the first two degree courses to remain on the degree: Programming for Data Science and Statistical Methods. You do not need to complete these courses before you enrol, they will simply form part of your first term studying the degree.

If you do not achieve a pass (50% weighted average or higher) in both of the first two courses, you will not be able to continue and will be withdrawn from the degree.

Your prior learning on Coursera could bring you one step closer to your MSc Data Science (Statistics) degree

The Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate on Coursera is recognised as Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (ACPL) for the University of Leeds MSc Data Science (Statistics) degree. Eligibility requirements apply.
This means that by completing this certificate you could gain 15 credits toward the degree, potentially saving you £1,250 ($1,643). All you need to do is add your Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate in the qualifications section of your degree application.

Proficiency in English language is essential to study at the University of Leeds. You will need either:

  • IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component. Find out more about English language requirements on the University of Leeds website or
  • a degree taught in English from a recognised institution, lasting at least two years at the undergraduate level or one year at the masters level, which can be evidenced by transcripts and/or certificates.

For standard entry you will need to have achieved a 3 year Baccalaureat or a 4 year Bachelor degree with one of the following grades:

  • 3.1 GPA (out of 4.0)
  • 7/9
  • 9/12/li>
  • 73% (when pass mark is 50)
  • 78% (when pass mark is 60)
  • A lower requirement of 2.8 GPA (out of 4.0), 6.5/9 or final grade B, 72% (when pass mark is 60), 75% (when pass mark is 50) is accepted from a select number of institutions.
