Earning the Higher National Certificate (HNC) helps prepare students for the workforce or higher education. Learn more about this certification, qualification level, common coursework, typical duration, average cost, and the enrollment process.

What is a Higher National Certificate?

The Higher National Certificate is a vocational education programme focusing on learning by doing. Successful completion results in a level 4 qualification, preparing you for work in your chosen field or continued higher education to pursue a degree.

HNCs are an excellent choice for people pursuing specialised training to prepare for a specific career path. They can also be an effective option to gain professional status and advance in your current career or if you wish to continue to complete a three-year degree programme. After completing an HNC, you can typically begin a bachelor’s degree as a second-year university learner.

    Qualification level

The majority of the United Kingdom uses a system with eight qualification levels, ranging from one, entry-level, to eight, the most advanced. The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) oversees the 12 qualification levels in Scotland. The HNC in Scotland typically takes a year to earn and counts as an SCQF level 7.

Elsewhere, a Higher National Certificate is considered a level 4 qualification, representing a higher level of learning and comprehension than that attained through core courses in secondary education. Other level 4 qualifications include level 4 diplomas, a certificate of higher education, and a higher apprenticeship.

    Common coursework

HNC programmes are short-cycle programmes that take one year to complete, with coursework totalling 12 to 15 credits. All credit courses integrate maths and language skills. The main focus of these courses depends on the certificate, and every course gets broken down into units that cover the overarching subject.

    Duration

Earning a Higher National Certificate takes one year to complete when enrolled full-time. If registered part-time, completing your HNC can take two to four years.

    Average cost

Completion of HNC costs an average of £4000 to £10000 per year. Depending on location and the organisation hosting the programme, the total cost can range from £4000 to £8000. Financial assistance is also available to help offset costs. For example, you may qualify for help through Student Information Scotland or Student Finance England.

What HNC qualifications can I study?

Higher National Certificates are available in various subjects, making them a good option for career-minded individuals interested in various fields. Some of the more commonly pursued qualifications include:

    • Accounting

    • Agriculture

    • Biology

    • Business management

    • Childcare Practice

    • Construction

    • Counselling

    • Engineering

    • Health

    • Social services

How do I earn a Higher National Certificate?

To earn an HNC, you must first ensure that you possess the appropriate prerequisites. Once you have met the requirements, you must decide which HNC qualification programme to pursue and search for schools that offer your intended HNC programme.

After your HNC programme, you will undergo assessments and receive one of four grades:

    • Pass (P): sufficient performance

    • Merit (M): high performance

    • Distinction (D): outstanding performance

    • Unclassified (U): did not meet the criteria to receive a passing grade

    Prerequisites

Requirements can vary, but students must typically hold at least one advanced level (A level) qualification or Advanced Highers in Scotland (or equivalent) to qualify for an HNC program enrollment. These level 3 qualifications are subject-based and prepare students for further study, training, or employment.

    Finding a college or university

Typically, higher education colleges and some universities offer HNCs. Once you have decided on a subject, you must determine which schools offer your intended programme.

    Application process/enrollment

Once you have decided on an HNC program, you must ensure you have all the necessary prerequisites and secure the finances to pay for your enrollment. From there, consider contacting your intended school directly to apply.

Career paths you can pursue with an HNC

HNC programs exist to give students skills for their intended field of work. As a result, completing your HNC can prepare you to enter the workforce immediately. Below are a few common career paths that HNC completion leads to:

    • Actor

    • Engineer

    • Farm manager

    • Hotel manager

    • Designer

    • Construction manager

    • Veterinary assistant

    HNC vs HND

The HNC is a level 4 education programme in England, Ireland, and Northern Wales and an SCQF level 7 in Scotland. It takes a full year to complete, and students who earn an HNC have an education comparable to a year-one university learner. The Higher National Diploma (HND) is equivalent to completing a second year at university and typically takes two full years.
