About the Course

In this course, you'll get a big-picture view of using SQL for big data, starting with an overview of data, database systems, and the common querying language (SQL). Then you'll learn the characteristics of big data and SQL tools for working on big data platforms. You'll also install an exercise environment (virtual machine) to be used through the specialization courses, and you'll have an opportunity to do some initial exploration of databases and tables in that environment. By the end of the course, you will be able to • distinguish operational from analytic databases, and understand how these are applied in big data; • understand how database and table design provides structures for working with data; • appreciate how differences in volume and variety of data affects your choice of an appropriate database system; • recognize the features and benefits of SQL dialects designed to work with big data systems for storage and analysis; and • explore databases and tables in a big data platform. To use the hands-on environment for this course, you need to download and install a virtual machine and the software on which to run it. Before continuing, be sure that you have access to a computer that meets the following hardware and software requirements: • Windows, macOS, or Linux operating system (iPads and Android tablets will not work) • 64-bit operating system (32-bit operating systems will not work) • 8 GB RAM or more • 25GB free disk space or more • Intel VT-x or AMD-V virtualization support enabled (on Mac computers with Intel processors, this is always enabled; on Windows and Linux computers, you might need to enable it in the BIOS) • For Windows XP computers only: You must have an unzip utility such as 7-Zip or WinZip installed (Windows XP’s built-in unzip utility will not work)...

The course is an excellent overview of database technologies and introduction into big data. Useful also for those who already worked with a few SQL engines. MIllion thanks to the creators! :)

Awesome foundation to build on skills of query and analysis of big data and to use big data technologies like Hive and Impala

I Really enjoyed the course and the instructor is perfect

Quite basic. I understand that the course is aimed to for everyone, including those without a programmign background. But I feel this course could have been compressed into fewer weeks, and the contents of Course 2 and 3 can be spread earlier in this course.

Warning: Anyone thinking of doing the Specialization, consider the Honours track with pinch of salt. Even though you get an Honours banner for the individual courses, for some twisted/lazy logic the final Speclalization certificate doesn't show the Honours banner. Might not be a big deal to some, but still a bit of a let down. Especially when you paid for the subscription.

Not an entirely useless course, as you do learn about concepts like structured vs unstructured data, different storage options for big data, etc. However, the videos & readings take far too long explaining these subjects & could have conveyed the information in half the time. The other major thing to note is that this is a very old course, something not mentioned by Coursera. The material dates from late 2018 based on what the instructor says in the videos. While it does deal with the general area of big data, a large part of the course is basically an advertisement for Cloudera software solutions, as they existed in late 2018, again something not made clear in the description. Finally, users should note that this course uses peer review grading for the final project. The project itself tests very little of the material from the course, while peer reviews mean that you're dependent on enough people doing the course at the same time, or being prepared to review you later. The quality of reviewing from your peers, will of course vary greatly, though there is a pre-set structure to follow.

No real hands-on training

As with many other courses on this platform, the content taught in the instructional materials seems loosely connected to the questions and the quizzes. Some things are throughly explained, others are just brushed over- at the instructor's will, it seems. Not to mention that the course asisstant's help was ... shall we say... less than helpful.

I do not recommend this course.

The quality is so poor and full of repetitions. The whole course can be fit into less than half an hour. No hands-on practice. Waste of time!

Having peer graded assignments is a waste of everyone's time.
