About the Course

Welcome to Spanish for Successful Communication in Healthcare Settings! This course is structured in four modules, each one revolving on a topic related to the physician-patient interaction. Each module contains four lessons; on grammar, vocabulary, the dynamics of the spoken interaction, and aspects of sociocultural relevance. The video lessons are unlike regular “lectures” in which you are just listening. Instead, you should think of them as virtual classes where you are supposed to reflect, complete activities, and even get extra practice on your own time. The videos are a roadmap that will provide what you need to complete the activities on the student handout. Each module is followed by a 10-question quiz. It is important that you complete the lessons sequentially, as they build upon each other....

The Professora, Maria Victoria Abad Rabat, was an excellent teacher (with a lovely madrileño accent), and the content of the course will be very useful to me for my part-time medical interpreting. I highly recommend this course.

Seamless mixture of language learning with the conversational concepts that any medical professional might need. I feel like I learned more than just Spanish - I learned how to contextualize my study of grammar and vocabulary.

Excellent overview of using Spanish in Healthcare Settings. The real audio examples were very helpful. You will need some background in Spanish (intermediate).

This course gives a good overview of medical-specific Spanish words (such as laboratory tests), and variations in vocabulary to ensure understanding and a feeling of respect between the doctor and patient depending on different factors (patient's age, unfamiliarity with professional medical terms, etc.)

I was surprised by some of the examples of "friendly" versus "cold" doctor behavior...as a then-young, "ethnic" female doing customer service for patients with varying degrees of emotional trauma or chronic illnesses in my particular workplace, even smiling at a patient would sometimes result in an undesired reaction from my boss, the patient or patient's spouse! Direct, brief communication like the "cold" doctor was more likely to be appreciated as professional while even respectful friendliness was often interpreted as flirtatiousness, evasiveness, condescension, or lack of respect for the patient's time and attention span. This seems to be a cultural variation so I would apply this course's recommendations with caution depending on your own work environment.

A second thing that I noticed was that there were no quiz answers to review after questions are marked wrong. At times I was able to review the lesson and correct my error, but for a few questions I am still unsure of what the correct response was. This may be because I need more practice in Spanish outside of this course which is intermediate level.

In conclusion, I think anyone who is somewhat fluent in Spanish and has a need for healthcare will find this course straightforward and helpful. It's also great that you can pay for the certificate at the end of the course when you're sure you've passed :)

Goes into the nuances of communicating with patients and colleagues in a healthcare setting, such as taking account into patient age, cultural background, psychosocial concerns, etc. Overall I enjoyed the course. The instructor spoke very clearly for a beginner Spanish learner like me. I did not give it five stars because I would have liked more focus on the medical vocabularies and dialogues rather than so much focus on the application in social/cultural context. This may only be because those are similar to how it is in the healthcare setting in America using the English language, but I could see how that may be helpful for learners who have had less exposure to the healthcare setting in a similar culture. Overall, I would recommend the course to others, as I did learn plenty from it. It was challenging for a beginner Spanish learner like me, but the subtitles and transcripts helped so much!

I thought this course was very well organized and I learned a lot from it. My one complaint is that the quality of the audio recordings of the doctor-patient interactions was generally poor.

The course is good. There is a lot of information given. I would have preferred smaller pieces of information and maybe some links to some practice exercises on the grammar points.

If your Spanish is good and you have an academic background, then you probably won't learn much. But the course is good.
