Minus 1 star for the outdated and clumsy user experience from Coursera: impractical, difficult to navigate and confusing. The peer-rating system is particularly bad. Time to completely rethink it.

This was such a wonderful course. I had taken music theory in college and had the classical training, but this course is exactly what I wanted to learn beyond what I was taught. Scarlet does such a great job conveying the emotions that are associated with certain chords and chord progressions and really breaks down what you need to create prosody in music. It is challenging, but in the best way possible.

 That was a great course and I loved the chords lessons in songwriting.

Great course. You'll learn about which chords and melodies - along with the lyrics - invoke specific emotions. I would say that the only downside is that it's more geared toward piano/keyboard players instead of other instruments. An understanding of basic music theory is a good idea before starting this course.

The learning experience was very good. My issue is the section 5 final project. The instructions didn't match grading parameters. I included 2 9ths and 2 7th in my song including one non-diatonic chord which was not part of the requirements for the final song. It showed up in peer grading for two non-diatonic chords. Finally, the instructions were to follow a two verse, two chorus format in the minimum. A bridge was written into the peer grading. That's troubling. This was the first project of the 5 Berklee courses I've enrolled where grading didn't match instructions. Please, be consistent with instructions where it mirrors peer grading. I was put in a position to blemish a grade outcome where I believe, in particular, one student excelled. He received two 3s (Proficiency) and two 4 (Exceptional). 14 out of 16 . If I interpret the grade correctly, he received 87.5% (14/16) unless grade skewing is happening. In my mind, based upon instructions, he missed a 9th leading to 15/16 - 93.75% but his keyboard play and voice was magnificent. The instructions did not match grading harming his grade It's not peer grading under the spotlight, it's the instructions versus peer grading requirements mismatch that I believe requires training. Be consistent. Finally, I haven't been peer graded yet which is unusual. However, peer grading parameters may be an issue. Frankly, In this course, I don't expect a certificate due to no final grade. I wrote a song about my disabled daughter. I've received follows and likes on SoundCloud. The first verse is birth, second is diagnoses and the third is the wonder of her. The chorus flows towards the life with our adult disabled daughter. My wife worried the second verse was too negative. That an unstable verse. The chorus and third verse, particularly the final verse, resolves the instability. The first verse is obvious. The birth of our child was beautiful. She has Angelman Syndrome which Collin Farrell recently brought into focus I wrote my song the day before he announced his Foundation. This song is dear to me. Too bad I may not be heard by a peer or more in this course. I've grown confident in lyrics and music. I won't let this course deter me.

Good but yet can specify the reasons why harmonic rules presented work in the first place from past examples such as classical music.
