About the Course

Back-end developers write applications that end-users use to interact with databases. Some common tasks that end-users carry out using these applications include storing, searching, extracting and manipulating data. Therefore, it’s essential that all back-end developers possess strong knowledge and experience with how databases work. In this course, you’ll receive an introduction to databases and explore the different ways in which they can be used to store and manage data. You’ll also learn to distinguish between different types of database management systems. You’ll then practice basic creation and data selection tasks with the use of Structured Query Language (SQL) commands. By the end of this course, you’ll be able to: - Demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and principles that underpin how databases work - Identify and explain the different types of core technology and management systems used in databases - Identify and interpret basic SQL statements and commands - Manipulate records in a database with the use of SQL statements and commands - Outline alternatives to SQL - and plan and design a simple relational database system You’ll also gain experience with the following: - Fundamental concepts in database - Basic MySQL syntax and commands - Database management systems - Relational databases...

It was a informative and precise course with sufficient labs to get hands on.

I found Normalization is pretty tricky to implement. More detailed readings shall help me improve and gain confidence.

They do not teach Databases and SQL anywhere like here. Meta sure does Software Engineering very differently. If you want to be the best, I guess you ought to learn from the best.

The first 3 weeks are the best part of the course. There is mention at the beginning of setting up a XAMPP instance on your local machine but no actual instructions. There are lab environments but every single one is a blank slate which presents issues later on where you're supposed to update or delete from a database that doesn't exist. The student needs to create it first so they can use the insert code to populate the database for the exercise. There are some issues with quizzes over information that hasn't been learned yet and the videos immediately after covering what you were just quizzed on. Week 4 takes a nose dive as they attempt to teach normalization. It's very theory heavy with no actual lab environment to practice in. The material is ok, but there are other courses out there that teach the same material in a better manner. The final assessment includes some problems where you type in the SQL command to get a resulting table. There is one instance where capitalization of your answer should be doesn't match the capitalization of the table you're supposed to create. I'd only suggest taking this course as part of the overall Meta specialization. As a standalone class you're better off looking elsewhere.

The videos were clear and professional, but the quizzes, readings and assignments were absolutely riddled with errors and insufficient information (example: you have to write a line of SQL to do a database operation but they don't tell you the name of the table, so you have to guess, and if you get it wrong they just say "go rewatch the video"). If you're going to take this, keep the discussion forum open at all times.

The final assessment was not clear nor well thought out. Should have been a lab button. Foreign Key question had an incomplete table creation field. This is what got you a 3. Students should not have to experience such a poorly put together final assessment.

The final quiz is really frustrating. It's really easy to enter the correct answer wrong. Wrong according to the validation process. Not actually a wrong answer.

TLDR version: Good course overall with room for improvement. Quizzes are problematic sometimes.

Perhaps the worst course from the Back-end Development Specialization.

Some quizzes and SQL exercises are not in sync with the content taught.
