About the Course

The course is awarded The Best Free Online Courses of All Time, and Best Online Courses of the Year (2021 Edition) by Class Central (http://www.classcentral.com). --- Information systems (IS) are important assets to business organizations and are ubiquitous in our daily lives. With the latest IS technologies emerging, such as Big Data, FinTech, Virtual Banks, there are more concerns from the public on how organizations maintain systems’ integrity, such as data privacy, information security, the compliance to the government regulations. Management in organizations also need to be assured that systems work the way they expected. IS auditors play a crucial role in handling these issues. In the course “Information Systems Auditing, Controls and Assurance”, you will explore risks of information systems, and how to mitigate the risks by proper IS Controls. You will also get familiar with the IS Audit procedures and how they are applied during the IS development throughout the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Finally, you will get to observe how we can make the system changes more manageable using formal IS Management practices, such as Change Management Controls and Emergency Changes. The conversations between the course instructor - Prof. Percy Dias, and the IS auditing practitioner will give you a concrete idea on how IS auditors perform their duties, the qualities to become IS auditors and future prospects of IS auditing industry. This course is suitable for students and graduates from Information Systems, Information Technology and Computer Science, and IT practitioners who are interested to get into the IS auditing field. It is also a good starting point for learners who would like to pursue further studies for IS audit certifications – such as Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)....

Pro. Diaz has taught and enlightened me about system audit a lot, most of this information was very new to me. I felt fortunate to have a mentor like him, and like to enroll in more courses with him.

I found the course to be fairly outdated, compared to more recent security risks. The content was good, but not as advanced as I had expected (I'm preparing for the CISA certification test.) I will need to take additional, more advanced course for that. But this was a good introduction course for people who are not familiar with auditing. I've been in IT for 40 years with lots of growth over that time, so the course was a good refresher but not as in depth as I'm looking for. The content was presented well and the online technology worked fine (viewing videos, taking the quizzes, etc.) There were also a few external resource materials linked to from the course, which are no longer available (the 3rd party providers had removed the content, or you now had to register on a website to access the content.) This course is not up to date with modern DevOps SDLC processes, so the course guidance is not in alignment with this practice. Also with the vast adoption of SAAS systems and cloud computing platforms, updated content should put more focus on new controls to address those risks, in addition to the increased risks of various approaches of hacking (phishing, malware, ransomware) and authentication requirements for MFA/2SV/2FA or even Passkeys, which is still a fairly new and developing approach. All in all, I think it's time to revamp and update this course.

Course was good but the videos were too long, therefore, the balance between videos and readings could have been better. For e.g., I have done other courses on Coursera and other platforms where the videos were more exciting, interactive and to the point whilst sharing a lot of information. The reading materials then complemented the videos, allowing for a greater deep dive depending on your understanding, allowing you to skip over topics you are already familiar with. With a course like this, interactive exercises would have been good to reinforce knowledge and/or a few hands-on exercises to ensure practicality (this could be done, while maintaining the time of the overall course).

Honestly, a little disappointed. If you consider courses like CISA which are very exhaustive, I expected this to be on those lines at a less deeper level. It covers general SDLC related things quite a bit, which most software folks would know already. Few things to learn, though.
