About the Course

This course covers both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of Vector Calculus. During the first week, students will learn about scalar and vector fields. In the second week, they will differentiate fields. The third week focuses on multidimensional integration and curvilinear coordinate systems. Line and surface integrals are covered in the fourth week, while the fifth week explores the fundamental theorems of vector calculus, including the gradient theorem, the divergence theorem, and Stokes' theorem. These theorems are essential for subjects in engineering such as Electromagnetism and Fluid Mechanics. Note that this course may also be referred to as Multivariable or Multivariate Calculus or Calculus 3 at some universities. A prerequisite for this course is two semesters of single variable calculus (differentiation and integration). The course includes 53 concise lecture videos, each followed by a few problems to solve. After each major topic, there is a short practice quiz. At the end of each week, there is an assessed quiz. Solutions to the problems and practice quizzes can be found in the instructor-provided lecture notes. Pros: -Professor seemed very enthusiastic. -Topics were explained in a thorough yet concise manner. -Practice exercises were useful to review topics. -Professor was very quick when answering questions. -I especially liked how derivation and integration were taught, it was very useful. Cons: -My main issue is probably with assessments. The material given was rather difficult (which is not necessarily a bad thing), yet assessments were quite trivial. All of them were multiple choice questions with practically an infinite number of possible attempts, so although I carefully read through the entirety of the material, I do not feel as accomplished. A simple solution for this would be to ask for a numerical solution to problems. -Related to the previous point, all practice quizzes had their answers in the answer sheets, which also decreases the effort needed for the course (no, I am not going to try and solve all of them on my own if I have the answer right there). -A few topics were not very useful (e.g., quaternions, Kronecker-delta, Einstein's summation). I understand their historical significance, but they were taught briefly in a very specific context and never again used. -Professor's answers were often too succint. -A few demonstrations skipped a step or two, which made reading sometimes more difficult than it should have. Nevertheless, I appreciate the effort put into the answer sheets. -I would had liked a few more intuitive real-life situations (e.g., electrodynamics), as to relate the course to engineering.

Overall, a comprehensive overview of the subject though very difficult to understand and interpret without using additional resources like textbooks or other lecture material.

My expectations for this course were maybe too high. I wanted to gain an intuition for using vector calculus but instead, the course only taught me some rules and how to do calculations. My motivation disappeared rapidly. I suggest including more points of view and explanations why the equations are like this and not another way, in order to help the students to understand these rather hard concepts. Anyway, thank you for your effort, and wish you all the best!
