About the Course

Learn how to create data visualizations and dashboards using spreadsheets and analytics tools. This course covers some of the first steps for telling a compelling story with your data using various types of charts and graphs. You'll learn the basics of visualizing data with Excel and IBM Cognos Analytics without having to write any code. You'll start by creating simple charts in Excel such as line, pie and bar charts. You will then create more advanced visualizations with Treemaps, Scatter Charts, Histograms, Filled Map Charts, and Sparklines. Next you’ll also work with the Excel PivotChart feature as well as assemble several visualizations in an Excel dashboard. This course also teaches you how to use business intelligence (BI) tools like Cognos Analytics to create interactive dashboards. By the end of the course you will have an appreciation for the key role that data visualizations play in communicating your data analysis findings, and the ability to effectively create them. Throughout this course there will be numerous hands-on labs to help you develop practical experience for working with Excel and Cognos. There is also a final project in which you’ll create a set of data visualizations and an interactive dashboard to add to your portfolio, which you can share with peers, professional communities or prospective employers....

Great Course! Still some gaps between what is expected to have learned and what was actually taught as far as a couple of the charts are concerned. But overall just an absolutely WONDERFUL course.

This course was the most difficult so far and took longer because of the unfamiliarity with Cognos. But you will learn a lot and become proficient with the basics of that tool. I made a lot of use of the Discussion forum during this one and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and promptness of the responses by staff member Pooja Patel.

In my opinion, the step-by-step instructions could benefit from a "narrative" portion along with the "script" portion that simply describes which buttons to click and where to place your cursor. It begins to feel like doing taxes--checking boxes without quite understanding how it all fits together. Even though you eventually get a wider view of the activity, from grading others' submissions it's clear some students struggle getting there in time to complete their best work. Even just a paragraph to remind students that "you're creating a visualization that expresses X compared to Y, so it's important to include items A, B and D because the chart would not be informative without them." I think people sometimes get so obsessed with the many mechanical details involved they overlook some of the most important information they need to include.

This course is great for beginners who would like to enhance their reporting skills. Although it is basic, it goes to show how as simple as learning the different graphs and software such as Cognos are very important in producing high quality reports/dashboards. Especially when such simplicity is forgotten in reporting and often in the industry practice Senior Management are always making requests which ends up with information overload that confuses the audience. In the end, most Senior Management only looks at the key piece information and this is what this course emphasize on. I only provided 4-stars as I would have expected more advanced techniques as I know already most of the materials the course offers (besides Cognos)

I love this course but I won't give it the 5th start as I don't find it fair that our work is evaluated from people doing the course. This means it's not someone experienced enough and it can be confusing if you get the right answers and follow the instructions but someone that maybe didn't understand it properly will evaluate you incorrectly. It happened me and it took me time to double check my work just to find out I was doing it right but still not getting the correct grades. Other than that great content and good courses.

I understand why IBM would push their own data visualization software, but it is rather unfortunate, because you very rarely see Cognos as a requirement when searching for jobs, or even as a 'nice to have'. This course convinced me that Cognos is a very helpful tool, but I would have liked to see other tools as well, such as Tableau or PowerBI, which are not featured in this certification at all. The Excel part of this course was very informative, but the Cognos part was lacking in multiple aspects.

The course was dense in content, leading me to understand fully its topics, but In some instances the screenshots of how to do things was a bit confusing due to the fact there are multiple access point to do things around these software. To improve this it is possible to include and more zoom out picture frame in those instances where it is needed. Overall, thank you for providing this course and allowing me to improve my data analysis skills to become a better processional.

The Excel videos were great! However, the Cognos Dashboard content was difficult to grasp. I wish the videos were more descriptive of what was being created, why they were being created, and how to click the mouse to get different features like the Excel videos. The Cognos labs needed to indicate same. I spent quite a while on the Cognos content, and while I received full marks, I wasn't sure if what I was doing was correct.

It introduces the learner to different tools for visualization and creating dashboard for data. The optional lesson on google looker also very helpful. It'd be better to have videos for looker studio as well. overall i learned a lot from this course and now i can confidently create basic and advanced level dashboards using microsoft excel, Cognos and google looker studio.

Good course, learned a lot and things were explained nicely. Downsides are that the audio volume changes between videos (sometimes quiet; sometimes loud) and the last assignment should have two upload options and only has one and this appears to have been an issue since well over a year ago. Thankfully knew a solution that was accepted. Overall, I'm happy with the course.

Very basic but not super great quality for that. Labs (for Cognos) were somewhat outdated. There are years old problems in discussion forums that I still encountered when doing the same assignments. Final assignment grading criteria is not nicely refined and clear and does not exactly match all that was required during the completion of the task.

There is a major issue with the first three courses at least. All the assignments provide the very specific instructions how to do them, but they are devoid of any explanation. In a good course, instead of giving a recepie, effort should be made to expalin why we have to follow this step, and what else is available for completing this task.

This has been the best course so far in the series. The man's voice is better than the female one, sounds more like a real person instead of a computer generated voice. Video lessons were shorter and to the point and more labs to immediately practice what was covered in the videos.

The course and assignments were great but for the Visualization platform I think teaching Power BI or Tableau would be much more useful as these two are more commonly used. However I do understand that IBM wants to promote their own platform, so It's fine.

I wish there is more information about the clear instruction using Mac compared to PC. Many function and steps are different if you use Mac. It takes time to figure things out without proper instruction. Otherwise, it's great.

The part of the course on Microsoft Excel was high-quality and sufficient, on IBM Cognos it was high-quality and unfortunately insufficient, there could have been more information on several options and functions of Cognos.

I recently completed a data analytics course on Coursera, and it was a valuable learning experience. The course content was well-structured, starting from foundational concepts and gradually moving to more complex topics.

In general the course was great. The only thing is that for very beginners is really difficult to grasp even after a few attempts, therefore instructions should be broken down more in detail.

I really enjoyed the course and how it explains in detail to make dashboards. I feel confident with working with IBM cognos now, However a little bit of more practice would have been better.

This course was not easy, I have never used IBM Cognos before. I was nervous logging into it and making sure I am doing it right. I end up using 2 monitors to see what I am doing.

I really feel like I learned a lot, but in the final exam it was very difficult for me to understand what was being asked, because the instructions were not clear enough.
