About the Course

Meet Jim Barton, the new CEO of Santa Monica Aerospace. Jim's job won't be easy: the company's hemorrhaging cash, struggling to regain investors' trust after an accounting scandal, and striving to transform its culture to become a more global competitor. In this course, you’ll travel with Jim as he takes on leadership challenges ranging from strategy execution, to inspiring people, to maintaining an ethical approach. Experts agree that twentieth-century leadership practices are inadequate for the stormy twenty-first-century present. This provocative course equips you with the insights you'll need to rise with the occasion of a rapidly shifting business landscape. The course is based on a book, Harder Than I Thought: Adventures of a 21st Century Leader, by Robert D. Austin, Richard L. Nolan, and Shannon O'Donnell, published by Harvard Business Review Press. Purchase of the book is optional. If you want more information about the book or wish to buy it, see https://hbr.org/product/harder-than-i-thought-adventures-of-a-twenty-first/an/10332-HBK-ENG or http://www.amazon.com/Harder-Than-Thought-Adventures-Twenty-First/dp/1422162591 After taking the course, you'll be able to: o Enact your own personal leadership approach, derived from your ongoing evaluation of how Jim Barton has handled his leadership situation, as well as from established leadership concepts and frameworks; o Avoid leadership actions that might have worked in the past, but are not suited to a newly challenging 21st century world; o Navigate treacherous new 21st century leadership challenges, such as greater reliance on specialized workers or the need to respond to external scrutiny in an increasingly transparent world (and many more); o Avoid "slippery slope" ethical failures, and think more clearly about the separation between public and private life for a 21st century leader....

Touches on a number of aspects of leadership in today's world. I found the reading material very useful, sometimes voluminous but extremely relevant.

Its a well built course based on a case study in the manufacturing and rather unique aircraft industry. The case study takes you through nearly all elements of challenges and decision making that leaders are presented with. Every module of this course can be used to think through your own approach in the presented situation and to understand your own style of leadership. Take time to read through the comments and submission of other learners - as some of those views are thought provoking as well.

So whether you are starting your leadership journey in which case this course will give you a flavor of the decisions you will need to make OR if you are an experienced leader, but need a refresher - this course is worth your time.

The comments I have to improve the course are 1) some video links are broken and need to be updated 2) the course material can be refreshed with newer elements (eg empathy in the workplace) 3) an ability to communicate with the professors to bounce off a couple of thoughts 4) Feedback and reviewing peer submissions / comments during the training on various topics rather than only on final submission should be compulsory (say atleast 10 other peer reviews)

The course covers diversified concepts and is an excellent attempt of throwing light on how to deal with the challenges that are faced by a 21st century leader. A well curated and systematic approach with examples that are relatable to real life problems demonstrating both sides of the problem. Although, a few links to certain Youtube videos from Stanford and have been made private and are not accessible to the applicants. The wall street journal articles are also only available on a pay to view basis. All in all its a really good course.

It was very enjoyable and fun to follow Jim Barton’s journey, also valuably supporting the topics discussed in the modules. Very insightful video lectures. Some of the readings and external video materials are outdated, not available anymore or have paywall for access. However, this does not disturb significantly the wonderful learning journey. It definitely initiates strong reflections on leadership phylosophy, and the challeges of leadership for the present and the future.

The overall content is very good as an academic source for leadership topics.

However, some materials are not well reviewed:

- Some links are dead, and not accessible.

- Some links requires membership to read (like Wall Street Journal links)

I hope the course staffs can review the links frequently to update the best version.

Course is very good. But it is 5 years old and a few references provided (videos, articles etc) are all from the 1st decade of 21st century. The past 4-5 years have been tumultous and interesting and we need courses that capture the learnings from these years.

Nice course, but need to improve on the links. Some are not available anymore, some send you to pages that you need to subscribe (pay per view). In general well structured and very interesting topics.

I think the course materials were nice, especially the idea of dramatizing the cases but it would be better if the final assessment wouldn't be so hard.

Overall a good course. However, many links are not working any more, some are behind paywalls, and teachers do not appear to participate (anymore?).
