About the Course

Foundations of User Experience (UX) Design is the first of a series of seven courses that will equip you with the skills needed to apply to entry-level jobs in user experience design. UX designers focus on the interactions that people have with products like websites, mobile apps, and physical objects. UX designers make those everyday interactions usable, enjoyable, and accessible. The role of an entry-level UX designer might include empathizing with users, defining their pain points, coming up with ideas for design solutions, creating wireframes, prototypes, and mockups, and testing designs to get feedback. Current UX designers and researchers at Google will serve as your instructors, and you will complete hands-on activities that simulate real-world UX design scenarios. Learners who complete the seven courses in this certificate program should be equipped to apply for entry-level jobs as UX designers. No previous experience is necessary. By the end of this course, you will be able to: - Define the field of UX and explain why it’s important for consumers and businesses. - Understand foundational concepts in UX design, such as user-centered design, the design thinking framework, accessibility, and equity-focused design. - Identify the factors that contribute to great user experience design. - Review common job responsibilities of entry-level UX designers and teams that they work with. - Explore job opportunities and career paths within the field of user experience. - Explain why design sprints are an important and useful part of a UX designer’s work. - Describe common UX research methods. - Identify and account for biases in UX research....

It is pretty good. You learn new things even as someone who has some idea of what UX is. Would recommend to those who want to start learning because it is affordable and provides valuable information.

It has been fantastic so far. The gradual guided transition of a total newbee to the world of UX designing is commendable. The section on networking has been very useful in setting a path to walk on.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for allowing me to take this course. I come from a poor family and higher education has always been the privilege of the rich. Thank you that your excellent courses are now available to everyone. Thank you to the sponsor who made it possible. I have one bias that courses from google are quality interesting courses, and I was not disappointed))) Thanks for the interesting information and easy presentation, all the teachers are very nice people. But I especially want to thank Michael, he believes in you from the very beginning. The most difficult thing was to start and believe in my strength, that I can do it, and that I will pass these courses. My English is not so good, so a special thank you for the typed text and the subtitles, thanks to that I am improving my English skills. These courses were a breath of fresh air for me, due to the situation in Ukraine, it is very difficult to plan my life for the future now. The courses helped me to believe in myself that everything will be fine and that I will be able to do it. Thank you!

Great first Month. But It suggest talking about the website and portfolio part a bit later as all websites do cost money and most attendies first need inspiration before creating there first website

Overall very helpful and informative. Occasionally I was unclear if the assignment was telling me to do my own thing or just edit someone else's .

If you have a learning disability not user friendly. They make it sound plain and simple in videos and then give you readings that are completely different then ask the questions using both to basically confuse you. I wish they had written the questions following all of my notes. They are unclear and vague at times and having more than one correct answer but not telling you how many can be very confusing at times. Using other types of questions would help too like fill in the blank and word bank types. I also do not like that no one actually checks your assignments for feedback these would be useful.

UX Design is a functional skill which led me to believe that the majority of the course content would be around the specific skills, methodologies and techniques to build great user experiences for a target audience.

This is not the case.

The majority of this course is focused on highly devisive, unscientific and frankly patronising ideas of inclusiveness. Ironically, by not recognising their own highly devisive politics which obsess on group identity markers, Google has succeeded in developing a massively exclusive course. The course would be half the length and twice as effective if they bothered to run the content by a single person outside of California

Well, it generally was a total waste of time - from the first module the course offers to "create a web page (to land your designer's portfolio) that would most correspond with your UX Design views". I mean come on, are you serious? I have no ux design views, I have enrolled in this course to get some and this is what you offer as the first practical task? Also you'll hear a lot of "this is an important part of UX design process, but we'll discuss it later". Disappointed and decided to quit.

Total waste of time. I'm 70% of the way in, and I haven't learned A SINGLE THING ABOUT ACTUAL UX DESIGN PRINCIPLES.

I've wasted the first three weeks learning bout the office culture of being in a UX design environment.

Shame on me for thinking that a UX Design course would actually teach me about UX *DESIGN*. God forbid.

The "Foundations of User Experience (UX) Design" course has been an enlightening journey that has left me thoroughly impressed. From start to finish, the content has been meticulously crafted, providing a holistic understanding of UX design. The course strikes the perfect balance between theory and practical application, making it ideal for both beginners and those looking to refine their skills.

One of the standout aspects of this course is the way it breaks down complex concepts into digestible modules, ensuring that learners can absorb and internalize each concept before moving on. The hands-on exercises and real-world examples provided ample opportunities to put theory into practice, helping me grasp the essence of user-centered design. The guidance from experienced instructors and the interactive discussions with fellow learners added an invaluable layer of engagement.

What truly sets this course apart is its seamless integration of design principles and user empathy. The course doesn't just teach you how to create visually appealing interfaces; it teaches you how to truly understand and anticipate user needs, fostering a deep appreciation for the human aspect of design.

The final quizzes were slightly challenging due to the wording, but overall, as someone with some knowledge in UX Design and Research from my undergraduate education and from taking prior online classes on this topic, I really enjoyed this foundational class! I understand other students were looking forward to learning how to use tools like Figma and Adobe XD in this first class, but that's precisely why you included a reading on all the different tools used in the industry, in case some students wanted to explore more. Perhaps the course title is misleading, which is understandable. However, I enjoyed learning about the expectations of entry-level jobs in the UX industry since I will apply to more soon. (Sidenote: You won't learn how to create your own work portfolio until the second class of this certificate program, and Figma and Adobe XD are taught in Classes 3 and 5, respectively). Once again, thanks Googlers and the team at Coursera for this introductory class!

I have lerant about the foundational concepts in UX design, such as user-centered design, the design process, accessibility, equity-focused design and the factors that contribute to great user experience design. I have had the opportunity to gain knowlege about the common job responsibilities of entry-level UX designers and teams that they work with. Also I've learnt how I can create an online portfolio where I can showcase my works as a UX designer and the reasons why design sprints are an important and useful part of a UX designer’s work.

For someone who has a graphic design background but no UX experience, this course was amazing! I actually enjoyed learning and I love the fact that I could study at my own pace!

However, Week 4 lesson was something that I didn’t enjoy. I didn’t like the fact that I was assigned to find a mentor and had to create a website. I do think that mentioning  the topic of online portfolio, mentor, website, and networking is important to know—just don’t turn it into an assignment.
