About the Course

This course provides a practical understanding of common Linux / UNIX shell commands. In this beginner friendly course, you will learn about the Linux basics, Shell commands, and Bash shell scripting. You will begin this course with an introduction to Linux and explore the Linux architecture. You will interact with the Linux Terminal, execute commands, navigate directories, edit files, as well as install and update software. Next, you’ll become familiar with commonly used Linux commands. You will work with general purpose commands like id, date, uname, ps, top, echo, man; directory management commands such as pwd, cd, mkdir, rmdir, find, df; file management commands like cat, wget, more, head, tail, cp, mv, touch, tar, zip, unzip; access control command chmod; text processing commands - wc, grep, tr; as well as networking commands - hostname, ping, ifconfig and curl. You will then move on to learning the basics of shell scripting to automate a variety of tasks. You’ll create simple to more advanced shell scripts that involve Metacharacters, Quoting, Variables, Command substitution, I/O Redirection, Pipes & Filters, and Command line arguments. You will also schedule cron jobs using crontab. The course includes both video-based lectures as well as hands-on labs to practice and apply what you learn. You will have no-charge access to a virtual Linux server that you can access through your web browser, so you don't need to download and install anything to complete the labs. You’ll end this course with a final project as well as a final exam. In the final project you will demonstrate your knowledge of course concepts by performing your own Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) process and create a scheduled backup script. This course is ideal for data engineers, data scientists, software developers, and cloud practitioners who want to get familiar with frequently used commands on Linux, MacOS and other Unix-like operating systems as well as get started with creating shell scripts....

Very helpful for the practical, common commands introduced in this course. The real-world weather project is quite challenging for new learners like me, but I did learn a lot!

The course elements were very easy and in more detail. This course taught me so many essential and advanced commands of Linux in a very short time with hands-on practice.

The practice project was far too advanced for beginners, I finished an introduction to computer science course, which was similar to that of a diploma, because it took me 8 months to complete, even though I could help myself with the syntax and logic, if you haven't done any computer science courses prior to this, it would've scared you or shocked you. There is nothing wrong with the practice project, but If they are going to make the difficulty for more experienced students/learners then they should explain it in a more clear and understandable manner. The rest of the course was good, I recommend this if you don't know how to write shell scripts and/or write Linux commands, it is a terrific curriculum to finish if your new or even if you just want to brush up on your existing skills. I don't like the generic videos where the person sounds and talks like a robot, but I can look past it and bear it.

I really liked to embark in this journey of Linux and scripting. I really wanted to test my Linux and scripting skills with this intro certification and it provided me with insightful information, practice and experience working with Linux systems. By taking each module of this course you'll find every information a Software Developer or even an Ethical hacker needs to have in a personal toolbox to excel in his/her career. Thank IBM for this amazing course!

Course was full of content, it was weel done, it clarify a lot of concept of how linux was born, how it works and how to use shells. I'd have liked to learn more of scripting. The final exercise was fun and effective, the screenshot uploading method was horrible.. but i would recommend this course, good job

Very useful for getting a first approach of common linux commands and avoid feeling intimidated about using tools from an OS different than Windows or Mac. More practice in real life is needed after this course to master all the commands, but you will surely learn how to learn more about the commands.

While there was some missing info in the peer review that I knew how to get around from writing bash scripts and using cron before, overall this course was great. I learned a lot of new info so I should be able to write even better bash scripts and move around linux more efficiently.

the course feature a great shell scripting lesson but the test/assignment contain some ambiguous instruction that could lead to the reduction of your score during the test. Anyway, it does not matter that much because ,in the end you will learn about the commands.

The files in "important-documents.zip" of the Final Project has expired modified-date. Please update the file so that the conditional for loop could store files in the array.

Bu in overall, the course is well explained. Lab works are good. Pretty enjoy the labs.
