In 2015, Christopher and Christen were indie game developers working through online demos, education games, and pursuing funding through venture capital, government grants and publishing. Experiencing the grind that is indie game development, Christopher and Christen had internal tools they used to empower workflows for a small team. With the rising cost and time required to make a game, they decided to build out their tools into an official product that could help other developers save time and money for building their dream game. These tools are now called Vertical Third and grew to a massive gameplay architecture available on the Unreal Engine Marketplace. Vertical Third has since received two Epic MegaGrants for its creation. Christen Main is a 2x Epic MegaGrant recipient for creating Vertical Third, a massive gameplay architecture available on the Unreal Engine Marketplace. Christen is the Creative Director, Illustrator and Game Designer for Vertical Third. Vertical Third was featured with a 3-Hour showcase on Inside Unreal, the official Unreal Engine Livestream. The Vertical Third tech demo is available on the Epic Game Store. Online play has also been implemented to work with cloud based instanced dedicated servers to showcase Vertical Third’s multiplayer capabilities. Christen is an Unreal Authorized Trainer and Epic Developer Community Author (EDC) for the UEFN Boba Shop course on the 3D modeling tools in Unreal Editor. In 2024, Christen and Christopher Main spoke on behalf of Epic Games at the Game Developers Conference at the Educator’s Summit. Their talk was “Game Connectivity: Polishing Your Bells and Whistles”. Christopher and Christen continue to experiment with stylized creative works with their pre-vis for “Wandering Wisp” and cinematic short “The First CastleDay”. Both of which have behind-the-scenes content that have appeared on Inside Unreal.
