About the Course

The COVID-19 crisis has created an unprecedented need for contact tracing across the country, requiring thousands of people to learn key skills quickly. The job qualifications for contact tracing positions differ throughout the country and the world, with some new positions open to individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent. In this introductory course, students will learn about the science of SARS-CoV-2 , including the infectious period, the clinical presentation of COVID-19, and the evidence for how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted from person-to-person and why contact tracing can be such an effective public health intervention. Students will learn about how contact tracing is done, including how to build rapport with cases, identify their contacts, and support both cases and their contacts to stop transmission in their communities. The course will also cover several important ethical considerations around contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine. Finally, the course will identify some of the most common barriers to contact tracing efforts -- along with strategies to overcome them....

This is very helpful to know how we can prevent this virus. Letting the community know that there's help. I still believe in our God that he will work miracles. He is my # 1 Dr. without God I am nothing. I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn this. Speaking to patients on a daily basis feels great. I am thankful that I can give some positive vibes because so many have already lost their faith.

An excellent intro into the world of contact tracing--something we desperately need to end this pandemic. I am using this material to educate myself in the hopes that I can be hired as a contact tracer and work remotely: it is a good general depiction of the needs of the job, and prepares participants to explore the specifics of local health agencies. I felt this course prepared me significantly for an initial interview

I was positively surprised, and I now have a couple of things to promote in my otherwise quite effective country Denmark (where the disease is low, but not due to contact tracing).

The course is very good on both the workings of the disease, its spread, how to compute the key dates, but also how to best communicate, balance the privacy versus all the things you ask from people, and how to solve problems and be effective.

This course is extremely challenging, but it quickly becomes clear why it must be. Contact Tracing is all that stands between someone with COVID-19 and the infection of countless others. Our communities and healthcare systems are at great risk. This course prepares you to effectively communicate with those who are infected so they may trust and cooperate with your efforts to reach out to everyone they may have exposed.

Course provides a good overview of the origins, transmission, signs & symptoms of Covid-19 . Teaches how to calculate the infectious period of a case and identify contacts. Techniques for effective communication reviewed as well as troubleshooting roadblocks to compliance. Would recommend course to anyone who wants to learn how to stop the spread of the virus or to gain the necessary skills to become a contact tracer.

Excellent and very timely course! Knowledgeable presenter who was easy to understand and presented information at a good pace. Videos were helpful and well done. Quizzes were at timely intervals to assess understanding as one progressed through the modules. I learned relevant information about SARS CoV2, Covid 19 and contact tracing. Thank you for providing this important course at no cost during the pandemic.

I'm afraid I do not have time to write much because Emily Gurley deserves praise. The class was easy to understand and challenging at the same time--enough to keep you interested and wanting to move forward. I found her voice to actually be a comfort and "Amy's" voice was quite soothing and helps me to understand what cases and contacts will need from contact tracers. Thank you Coursera, John Hopkins, and Emily Gurley.

I found this course to be fantastic. I follow the news, about covid-19, throughout the world especially in my state and country. This course has fine tuned my communication and active listening skills along with other skills. I personally don’t know or see the end of covid-19 any time soon but Contact Tracing is the answer to slowing and isolating this virus. I’d recommend this course for everyone. Thank you Coursera.

I was trained by the state and this course is real training, I feel more confident now after viewing the videos, studying and applying critical thinking. This course is not a bunch of slides that make you sleepy. It is so interactive and I just feel so happy I took it. I understand more about Covid19 and will always come back to listen to the videos or review the pdf's that I have downloaded into my computer. Awesome!

I really enjoyed this course. I was very impressed with how Dr. Gurley was able to break down Covid-19 into layman's terms, making it easy for the student to understand the disease. I also liked how the vignettes showed real world scenarios, giving examples on how to respectfully, build a rapport with cases and contacts. This allows for trust to be built and for the tracer to get the information needed for the job.

I enjoyed this course and I feel it was very comprehensive in covering the "how-to's" of becoming an effective and informed contact tracer. I liked the format of hearing the lecture and simultaneously being able to click on the "Save Note" function as you go, as well as the video vignettes of different situations and the quizzes at the end of each section so I could track my progress with integrating the information.

Probably one of the most interesting and really helpful concepts I had to date. COVID-19 Contract Tracing was discussed really well and provided practical examples in order to complement my learning with the discussed principles. The video also guided me really well on how to handle sensitive cases without judging them. The ethical considerations and the therapeutic communications were clearly presented by Dr Gurley.

So much gratitude for this course! I appreciated the opportunity and the "free" offering. I hope I get to put my new knowledge to good use. The set up was perfect.

PS: I did note that the female caller in the videos was portrayed as the more skilled caller and a male was used to portray mistakes in calling. While I feel that's probably the more likely reality, it might be better to mix the gender thing up a bit?

COVID-19 Contact Tracing was extremely informative & beneficial! The presenter, Emily Gurley, was well versed in the subject matter & presented the topic in a straight forward manner. It is evident that she has a passion about the topic & sharing her knowledge about public health with others. I would highly recommend this course as a nurse & am looking forward to implementing what I have learned into daily practice.

Thanks so much. I started this course while I waited to hear about where I could volunteer as a contract tracer in Connecticut. They weren't taking volunteers yet and it turned out to be the very course I need to volunteer here so I can start right away? I really want to help my community so thanks for helping me do so and thanks for the updates on protocol and CDC guidelines. Please continue to send any changes

The course used content I already knew as a nurse practitioner but applied it to contract tracing. Clear and concise, yet comprehensive. Only 2 comments: One of the questions on the final exam used squares but had only one correct answer which almost confused me. The first time I was supposed to submit an answer about communication, I had some confusion about how to proceed next when I submitted the wrong answer.

Thanks for this training. It was a great way to learn more about the origins of covid, how to detect the signs of the virus and how to quarantine/isolate (if you are infected) and for how long. I think this is a great lesson for people even if they have no intentions of applying for a contact tracing job because it helps to empathize and understand why we are being asked to quarantine and practice social distancing.

Excellent Course.

I have to disagree with one question, however, regarding when the isolation period can end. According to the latest update, the isolation period can be ended after 10 days have elapsed, symptoms have improved, and there is no fever for more than 24 hours off antipyretics. The update was issued on Aug 5th but the question in the final exam was not updated to reflect this as of August 6th.

Thank you

Excellent course! I took it mainly to educate myself about COVID-19 and to know how to effectively care for myself and my loved ones should we come in close contact or become infected with this illness. But course exceeded my expectations by giving me a much, much better understanding of what SARS-COV-2 is , its origin, how it is transmitted, who is at risk/higher-risk of getting infected by it, etc., etc., etc.

The course was clear concise and interesting. I gave me a broad range of tools in order to be an effective Contact tracer and the training in the skill so I may contribute to diminishing the transmission of the virus. I'm very grateful I was given the opportunity to take this course with out the financial burden. The course is inspiring I vow to do my very best to be a successful contact tracer. Thank you so much!

After a two week training/orientation with the county, this course is very informative. I like that they give you real information. The script they use is very well put together.

A great big THANK YOU to Dr Emily Gurley for the simple but well put together explanation of COVID-19.

I personally have family members who still don't get it, I will be recommending that they at least watch the introduction to this course.

Very detailed learning objectives for this course, and the course delivered on them all! The topics began fairly easy but progressed to more complex skills in communication and troubleshooting real-life situations. The video examples were extremely helpful. I learned a lot. And I hope that successfully passing this course in advance gives me an advantage as I apply to be a contact tracer with our health department.

Very informative, new information that is not given in media such as incubation isolation and quarantine periods. This course shows how valuable it is to trace individuals collect data to curve the spread if the Corona virus. So much information would recommend anyone to take this course especially person in healthcare and all essential personnel. Companies need to give this training to every employee.

I am very pleased with the clarity and the information given in this course. It was organized and very well done. I am hoping to use what I learned in a contact tracing job in my state. I want to do something to help in this fight against Covid19. Thank you for offering this course. Stay safe and healthy and we will get through this! The instructor was very good and the videos were really informative as well.
