About the Course

The COVID-19 crisis has created an unprecedented need for contact tracing across the country, requiring thousands of people to learn key skills quickly. The job qualifications for contact tracing positions differ throughout the country and the world, with some new positions open to individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent. In this introductory course, students will learn about the science of SARS-CoV-2 , including the infectious period, the clinical presentation of COVID-19, and the evidence for how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted from person-to-person and why contact tracing can be such an effective public health intervention. Students will learn about how contact tracing is done, including how to build rapport with cases, identify their contacts, and support both cases and their contacts to stop transmission in their communities. The course will also cover several important ethical considerations around contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine. Finally, the course will identify some of the most common barriers to contact tracing efforts -- along with strategies to overcome them....

Emily Gurley, PhD, MPH does a phenomenal job breaking the subject down for both knowledge and interpretation. I am looking forward to having enough of a basis to help serve in my community. The course is easy to follow and reinforces important point of the course/lecture. The use of diagrams are well placed and help in illustrating important points.

Great course. More time on the iso / quarantine calculations would be good because I think they may be tricky, especially when contacts are living with cases. More info on the kinds of resources that people like Jacob might be able to access to help him isolate safely without any financial burden would be good too.

Thanks for making this available!

Extremely well put together. Addresses all types of learning styles. Clear to understand and extremely informative. Thank you!

The only feedback I would offer is........under the level of difficulty you have easy and difficult but nothing inbetween, I never found the course content difficult of easy but somewhere inbetween. Fabulous course. Thank you!

I can think of no better class to take given the current situations. I was especially smitten with the reasons people would make it difficult to help with tracing. That's an area where science meets ideology that could use more answers. The greater good isn't in the cards for some and some feel they have the blessing of officials to act ignorant.

As a 15 year social worker who has held many blue collar & a few white collar jobs, I was quite impressed at how thorough this training was! I have NEVER felt so prepared & educated for a new position in my life! The video scenarios were extremely helpful. The detail regarding the intricacies of what I will be dealing with are invaluable. Great job!

It has been said that to meet the challenge of the Covid 19 pandemic, the United States will need an "Army of contact tracers." I took the class to learn the skills necessary to join the effort. However, I am disappointed that there is no directory of health agencies in need of these skills.

If there is to be an army, where is the recruiting office?

The instructor, Ms. Emily, was really good in conveying information about the current pandemic and contact tracing. The scenarios presented were pretty informative because the actors were very good, especially the actor for Larry. Even if you are not planning to become a contact tracer, this course is still informative to learn more about the virus.

I found the course to be easy to follow with the information building on itself in a logical process. The phone call examples were very helpful, especially since this was an online course and we didn't have the opportunity to practice the applications in class. This was my first online class and I found it to be much better than expected. Well done!

I am 64 an a health care professional (NP) I never assume it is OK to call someone by their first name until they have told me it is. I know things have changed but if we are calling elderly people (ie older than me) many of them are offended if they are called by their first name.

Otherwise I thought this was an excellent and informative course.

The course was extremely informative, I learned a great deal of the do's and don't's regarding communication. I learned was most interested with the active listening section of the course. I feel if others could see this course perhaps they would take the pandemic a lot more seriously. I personally will be recommending this course to people I know.

The information imparted by this online coursework is immeasureable and timely. Contact tracing is a skill which requires patience, empathy and persevereance. It requires some amount of flexibility and tweaking for low resource countries especially the technology aspect but I'm sure they will find ways to make it work. Thank you for this course.

I believe everyone on the planet needs this course, whether you want to be a contact tracer or not. Accurate information regarding COVID-19 in scanty; knowing how to one is identified as a case or a contact is important information. This should be taught in public health education classes and all healthcare specialties. Thank you for the course.

A useful course even for those who are not directly involved in contact tracing. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the course went beyond the specific contract tracing skills, and included things like background information on the virus, the legal and ethical aspects of dealing with information, and the importance of communication and rapport.

The course provided the information that was needed in order for me to become a Contact Tracer. I liked that it was self-paced and included quizzes at the end of each module. The examples of role-playing that were included provided real-life scenarios with clarity and understanding. It gave me the confidence to know that I can carry out this task.
