About the Course

The COVID-19 crisis has created an unprecedented need for contact tracing across the country, requiring thousands of people to learn key skills quickly. The job qualifications for contact tracing positions differ throughout the country and the world, with some new positions open to individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent. In this introductory course, students will learn about the science of SARS-CoV-2 , including the infectious period, the clinical presentation of COVID-19, and the evidence for how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted from person-to-person and why contact tracing can be such an effective public health intervention. Students will learn about how contact tracing is done, including how to build rapport with cases, identify their contacts, and support both cases and their contacts to stop transmission in their communities. The course will also cover several important ethical considerations around contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine. Finally, the course will identify some of the most common barriers to contact tracing efforts -- along with strategies to overcome them....

This is a wonderful course that will allow you to go through the basics of CoViD-19 and contact tracing. It will equip you with skills on how to determine when a case may be infectious and the required time for isolation of cases and quarantine of contacts. More so, the exercises will provide an insight on how you can establish effective communication with cases and contact by establishing rapport and learning how to empathize.

The course was interesting and informative. I enjoyed the scenarios, especially those that illustrated both the right and wrong practices for communication. The frequent quizzes were helpful in retention of the key concepts prior to the final exam.

Thank you Mr. Bloomberg, for providing me with the opportunity to learn about contact tracing and to perhaps have the option to seek employment in this vital public health field.

Excellent teaching from a qualified instructor! Appreciate the self pacing and intermittent ability to complete activities. As a nurse, it provided me a great review of information, and validation of skills and abilities. I am grateful this course is available at this difficult time, to help more understand the ramifications of this illness and safe ways we can accomplish stability and overcome. Thank you for your generosity.

Upon completing this course I have a better understanding of Covid-19 and how it effects someone who is affected. If their are any positions open in my area I would gladly assist in getting this pandemic under control. The training was great it reminded me of some of my healthcare classes in college. I would recommend this course to anyone to learn, for their own peace of mind or to assist them in seeking paid or unpaid work.

Excellent course . I being a Dental surgeon this course may not be totally practically applicable. but the comprehension the given knowledge will be useful in the Maxillofacial ward work , understanding the new SARSCovid 2 problem and the protection from this disease. This course was well presented. The lectures and the notes coincided. When I had an issue with how the days of quarantine and isolation are counted, I was able to gather notes from the course, print them, and figure it out so it made sense to me. It doesn't seem like a monumental task-- but that was the only piece of the course in which I found myself confused. The lectures were slow and clear, yet not too slow to be boring.

This extraordinary course made it very clear, step-by-step how to empathize with cases and contacts in such a way that they feel honored and respected and guided through a difficult time in their lives. Many questions were answered for me in the examples of effective and ineffective interviews. I appreciate the amount of work that went into the development of this course for the benefit of public health and safety. Thank you!

What do I like the most about this course is that it provides you with live examples of how to make a call? What to ask and what to avoid? I found it extremely helpful. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is working or looking to join Track and Trace services. I am grateful to Emily and her team for their effort to make this course available and that too for FREE! Keep up the good work.

Once again, thank you!

Covered all of the aspects. Level details to calculate incubation period and infectious period were very useful to understand easily. The lessons of ethics, technology and communication types are also very educational. Very reflective for my current virtual/digital tele medicine shadowing and hands on research work. Thanks for providing such a great course JHU and Thanks to Coursera to make it available in simplified format.

Excellent course! The vignettes and case/contact communication transcripts were extremely helping in understanding the do's and don'ts. I enjoyed taking this course and will be encouraging others to do so. I do not know If I will have time to actually become a contact tracer, but as an educator, I will recommend this course to my healthcare administration students. Thank you for providing such clear, and useful instruction.

It’s been a long time since I worked with patients usually this would be interesting, and an accomplishment. It’s necessary we are in a dire situation and I wish everyone had an interest in being a part of helping their community. Thank you for this opportunity to help someone I have felt guilty not being able to help others. Excellent course I will recommend to others in hope that by educating we rid ourselves of COVID-19.

Incredibly informative and engaging. This course taught me about aspects of COVID-19 that I did not already know, even though I've been keeping up to date with the news each day. The sections covering effective communication and the law surrounding contract tracing were also particularly interesting and relevant to anyone interested in concepts not limited to the medical aspects of the current situation. A brilliant course!

It's all about public good. But also a great skill that some businesses in my town could learn from. It may be more important for them to know the reasons and methods to social distancing, as restaurants, bars, clubs, and gyms seem to be the place where SARS-CoV-2 is easy to acquire. Make it easy to stop the spread, keep everyone healthy, and remain open (because it looks like we're gonna be open whether we like it or not).

Really enjoyed the interactive components of the course including the mid-video quizzes, calculator, etc. The information was clearly presented and the examples were great. I found the contact tracer phone calls to be helpful to watch. Good entry-level course for those interested in working in the area or understanding a little more.I wish that the calculator was under resources and easier to get to while doing the course.

I really enjoyed this course. It had information that was both familiar [cause of Covid-19 and transmission of the virus between people] as well as quite a bit of information that was new to me [methodology of contact and case tracing, length of quarantine vs isolation, description of isolation vs quarantine and so forth.] I would recommend others take this course for general knowledge about transmission and the disease.

I feel this was such an exceptional class. So needed and so streamlined. The exact point of onset to the finish. If this class could be viewed nationwide I believe the misinformation that plaques the tv and newspapers on the virus would end. This is what our country needs to educate itself on the entire process of Covid-19. I am grateful to have the knowledge to help in the process of stopping the spread of Covid-19.

This course gives a great overview of Covid-19 but also a through approach to understanding your role as a Contact Tracer. The information is easy to understand and provides great strategies for navigating the challenges that may be present when contact tracing. Sign up for this course! If not to better gain knowledge of Covid 19, then use it to better understand the public health tools we can use to survive this outbreak

I felt that the course had lots of information and was also challenging. It made me think and anticipate some scenarios that I may face as a contact tracer. There were still many unanswered questions and scenarios, because not all situations can be included. But I think that is helped me use my critical thinking to figure out some other things that I may have to deal with and how I might do so if new situations arise.

This is highly valuable especially during this pandemic that we badly need in-depth information about the deadly covid 2 viruses. I am very happy to have joined this grant for a certificate, aside from being health vigilant I definitely will be awarded a portfolio to show just in case I might consider landing on a contract tracing job! This is double help! Thank you so much! Truly appreciated from the bottom of my hearT!

Excellent presentation and very easy to follow the lectures. The quizzes are a good way to reinforce what you've learned along the way. Very pertinent information for an individual that will work as a contact tracer or an individual that just wants more knowledge about how COVID-19 spreads and how to help stop the spread. Good course either for the layperson or an individual with a medical background. Highly recommended.

Great course, quite informative. There is an issue with the link to section "why Stopping Transmission is so Important". The text seems correct but the video link is "Natural History" which was a previous lesson---so it appears the wrong link was attached there. When I looked up how to report this, it said click on the "confused face" icon -- I do not know if it is because I am on a Mac--but there are NO icons to click.

I do not intend on becoming a Health Department Contact Tracer, but as a Covid Compliance Officer in the film and television industry, this course has given me such confidence. I feel like I have a much better understanding of how to communicate why we have certain protocols in place, and to help frustrated or fearful people get the information they need on keeping themselves, their loved ones, and their community safe.

Very thorough. I appreciated having the transcription to follow along with the video since I'm more visual and want to read rather than listen. I also felt like the general format and user interface was easy to use and fairly intuitive. Some of the answers to some of the more general questions I was a bit skeptical about, but overall it was a good comprehensive run-through of what to expect when doing this type of work.
